The administrative capital of County Waterford is Dungarvan. It is a busy market town and attracting tourists in large numbers. There my be different opinions about monastic and early Viking settlement in the Dungarvan area, the town was established in 12th century as per the Anglo-Normans. Their motte and bailey at Gallows Hill to the west of the town still survives. A charter was granted by King John in 1215 and prosperity of the town continues until it was
destroyed in 1582, after that it started to decline. Dungarvan faced many 17 th century battles, because of its strategic location. The lack of amenities of a good trading port, it never regained its medieval glory. Duke of Devonshire started a programme of rebuilding Dungarvan in the beginning of the 19th century, today it owes much of its shape to that period. Somewhat prosperity returned to it but was very short lived as the great famine of the 1840’s had a devastating effect. There were some further setbacks but Dungarvan today is a flourishing commercial and tourist town and is an ideal centre to visit, Comeragh Mountains and the Ring Peninsula.
